2 PhD scholarships in NCN projects

Scholarship 1

**Call for Applications for a Doctoral Scholarship in a project run in collaboration with Jagiellonian University and founded by National Science Centre Poland**

**Mechanisms of cytotoxicity and antibacterial
activity of polycations**

As part of a project in collaboration with the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, we aim to understand the mechanisms underlying the toxicity of polycations in order to develop more effective antibacterial materials. We seek to test the hypothesis that polycation toxicity may be related to their ability to block ion channels. The research is motivated by the growing problem of antibiotic resistance and the increasing difficulty in treating many bacterial infections.

The PhD student will be responsible for the synthesis of new monomers and polymers, which will be tested in other research tasks, as well as for evaluating the suitability of the obtained materials for selected biomedical applications, particularly their antibacterial properties.

Scholarship 2

**Call for Applications for a Doctoral Scholarship in a project founded by National Science Centre Poland**

**Polymer molecular weight, unresolved issue of polyamines biological activity**

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria pose a serious threat to our health and lives. In this project, we aim to explain why certain polyamines exhibit varying activity depending on the length of their chains. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial before antimicrobial polymers can be effectively used as antibiotics or in products such as antibacterial packaging or advanced wound dressing materials.

As part of the project, the PhD student will be responsible for synthesizing new monomers and polymers, as well as evaluating their biological activity. A key aspect will be understanding the mechanism behind the strong correlation between the polymer’s molecular weight and its biological activity. In this work, we plan to use various techniques related to bacterial cell imaging and polymer labeling using fluorescent tags.
